Top 10 European Companies To Invest In 2014

European stocks advanced for a third straight week as data showing the euro area emerged from the longest recession on record outweighed speculation the Federal Reserve will trim monetary stimulus.

Italian banks led gains as Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA and Unione di Banche Italiane SCPA rallied at least 12 percent. GAM Holding AG jumped the most in almost four years as the asset manager said first-half profit more than tripled. That exceeded the median estimate of 0.2 percent growth in a Bloomberg survey of economists.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WALLSTCHEATSHEET]

BP is an oil and gas company that supplies these products all around the world. The company is still hurting from the oil spill disaster witnessed three years ago and it is said that relief efforts could potentially cut into this year profits. The stock has not made much progress and is trading in a value range. Over the last four quarters, earnings and revenue figures have been mixed, however, investors in the company have been optimistic about what theye heard during these earnings reports. Relative to its peers and sector, BP has been a weak year-to-date performer. WAIT AND SEE what BP does in coming quarters.

It should come as no surprise that demand for ultra-deep-water rigs isstrong in the Gulf now that the industry is finally moving past the BP (NYSE: BP  ) disaster. Oil companies have been investing heavily in the region and those investments are starting to bear fruit. Earlier this year ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) and its partners announced two major oil discoveries, Shenandoah and Coronado, which could be added to as the company plans to drill another five wells this year. The company has amassed over 2 million net acres in the Gulf, a position it recently added to as the company was the highest bidder on 30 blocks which added 172,000 net acres to its position. Needless to say, Conoco is expecting big things from its investments in the Gulf.

    Wednesday's Volume: 740,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 318,589

    Volume % Change: 85%

From a technical perspective, AER jumped higher here right above its 50-day moving average of $17.27 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last five months, with shares moving higher from its low of $14.84 to its recent high of $18.16. During that uptrend, shares of AER have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of AER within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if AER manages to take out its 52-week high at $18.16 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in AER as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $17.27 or above more near-term support at $17.17 and then once it sustains a move or close above its 52-week high at $18.16 with volume that's near or above 318,589 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then AER will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $20 to $23.

Reports last week out of Spain indicated that AT&T (NYSE: T  ) was looking at making an offer toTelefonica (NYSE: TEF  ) valued at $93 billion. According to Spanish newspaper El Mundo, the sale didn't proceed in part because of governmental concerns over having a foreign company buy the country's most valuable telecom player. Yet even if AT&T and Telefonica aren't met to be, there is ample evidence that America's dominant mobile companies have begun looking abroad for growth.

But the rising tide of US production at these price levels is also going to call into question the investment logic of even higher cost sources, such as Brazil's deep-water pre-salt reserves in the South Atlantic. If the US oil export ban falls—and I'm pretty sure it will—oil producers in high cost and infrastructure challenged regions—the Russia off-shore Arctic and some of the undeveloped reserves in Siberia—could well find it very difficult to raise the necessary—and huge—amounts of investment capital they'll need. I think we're already seeing evidence that the more hard nosed number crunchers in the oil industry—such as Norway's Statoil ((STO) in New York and (STL:NO) in Oslo) are already rethinking investments in high cost projects, such as Mozambique and the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline, that would bring natural gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe. Statoil and Total (TOT) recently decided not to exercise options to acquire 12% and 5% of the pipeline, respectively. Projected construction costs have climbed to $12 billion from $7.5 billion. (Statoil is a member of my Jubak's Picks portfolio.)
